Music plays an important role in the Istanbul way of life. Classic Turkish music, which was favored by the royal court, evolved from religious music and still holds on to its importance today. The Tango music of Istanbul’s Republican period, the compositions of Turkish musicians and jazz artists, the "classical Turkish artistic music" of the casinos and the western pop-inspired "light music" of the 20th century all made their marks on Istanbul. In contrast, the "people’s music" has it own unique traditions based on folk songs and the works of local groups. This music genre is disappearing over time. In its support of unique music, the Armada Istanbul makes every effort to support the original Roman residents living in its very own neighborhood of Ahırkapı, as well as to keep the music of Istanbul’s original Greek population alive. This support is evident everywhere from our choice of music in the Armada lobby to the musical choices played at independent events.
